Frequently Asked Questions
Ayahuasca-specific questions
Is ayahuasca safe?
Yes. When facilitated by experienced, trusted practitioners in a safe container. We work with qualified ceremonial leaders who guide the experience with integrity and deep respect for the medicine. You’ll be fully supported before, during, and after the ceremony.
What does ayahuasca feel like?
The experience is different for everyone. You may feel emotional, receive visual messages, revisit memories, purge (vomit, cry, sweat), or feel deep peace. The medicine meets you where you are. Our role is to guide you through the journey, not control it.
Do I need to prepare ahead of time?
Yes. You’ll receive a pre-retreat guide with dietary, energetic, and emotional prep steps. We’ll also have a group call before the retreat to go over expectations and mindset.
Can anyone attend this retreat?
No. We have an application process for a reason—to ensure it’s the right fit for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Those currently on SSRIs, antipsychotics, or with certain mental health conditions will not be eligible to participate in the ceremony.
Are there any mental health conditions that would prevent someone from attending this retreat?
Yes. To ensure your safety and the integrity of the retreat container, certain mental health conditions are contraindicated with ayahuasca and other plant medicines. These include:
- Bipolar disorder (especially Type I)
- Schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
- Psychosis or history of psychotic episodes
- Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)
- Severe depression (especially if untreated or currently medicated)
- Unmanaged anxiety or panic disorders
- PTSD with active flashbacks or dissociation (evaluated case-by-case)
These conditions can significantly increase the risk of adverse reactions and destabilization during or after ceremony.
What if I’m currently taking medication?
Some medications are dangerous to mix with ayahuasca due to interactions with the MAOI compound in the brew. You must not participate if you are currently taking:
- SSRIs (e.g., Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac)
- SNRIs (e.g., Cymbalta, Effexor)
- MAOIs (e.g., Nardil, Parnate)
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Antipsychotic medications
- Stimulants (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin)
- Lithium or mood stabilizers
- Migraine medications (triptans)
- Certain herbal supplements (like St. John’s Wort)
If you are considering tapering off medication to attend, this must be done under the guidance of a licensed medical provider at least 4–6 weeks in advance.
What if I’ve experienced trauma or have been recently diagnosed with anxiety or depression?
This is a healing space, but it’s important that each participant is in a stable place emotionally. If you’re in an active trauma cycle, deep crisis, or navigating recent grief, this may not be the right time.
We recommend applying only if:
- You are able to self-regulate emotionally during stress
- You have support systems in place (therapy, community, etc.)
- You are committed to integration, not just the ceremony experience
If you're unsure, we’re happy to schedule a private clarity call to help you discern timing and readiness.
Will there be a health screening process?
Yes. All participants will complete a confidential health questionnaire and may be asked to schedule a call with a facilitator. This helps us ensure that everyone who joins the retreat is aligned and safe to participate.
How do I know if this retreat is for me?
If you’re someone who:
- Feels ready to meet themselves more deeply
- Is open to non-ordinary states of consciousness
- Can respect the sacredness of the container
- Is looking for grounded integration, not escapism
Then La Fogata may be the spark you’ve been searching for.
What if I’m scared?
Fear is a normal part of transformation. We’ll help you build trust, not only in the medicine—but in yourself. You are not doing this alone.
